Mixed Media:
As part of my G.C.S.E Photography Course we completed a project on weird and wonderful, for my I chose mixed media. I focused on what inspires me and focused on taking photographs of beauty, reasons for this is because i am very interested in beauty, Before I changed my idea I was going to take photographs of my family to show that beauty is not just about the physical appearance but also is about what is on the inside and your love for people as individuals. Mixed media is any artwork that uses a variety of mediums in a single piece, such as oil, acrylic, collage, ink, paper, sculptures and all photography. The different combinations of media and varying compsition, colour and texture can be used for interesting effect. It has been said, Art is not a thing; it is a way. The process and materials used to create a work of art are always interest; with mixed media they are central to the work itself. I choose two photographers to work in the style of.

Research: Annette Messenger
Annette Messenger is a French Artist who was born in 1943. Her work focuses on photographs, prints, drawings and various materials. Her work has been exhibited all around the world. Annette uses memories as the focus for some of her work. She was inspired by her Father to follow a career in Art. During her time at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris she produced surrealist style sculptures. In 1961 Annette won the grand prize in an international competition sponsored by Kodak after her Mother entered one of her early photographs.
I think that Annette's work is really different and interesting. I like her work due to all the different types of pictures she takes, she doesn't just take one she takes a lot of beautiful pictures and designs them into a big circle, love hearts etc dangling them with wool and hooks, hooking them from her ceiling. Far away her pictures look like a beautiful piece of art, but when you get up close to the art piece you realize that it’s made up of tiny perfect pictures of different things and all together they mean something special. I have never seen a piece of work ever like this, I believe she has a very good imagination and she is original. I have picked Annette for my chosen artist because personally i really admire her work, she is a personal artist who inspires herself with all her memories.

Sally Mankus
The faces used in this mixed media work are mainly from photographs I have taken of friends and family members. Familiar brand names and symbols appear on some handles: Wearever, Saladmaster, Kitchen Craft, Miro, Queen, a crown....
Sally Mankus is an mixed media artist / photographer. She has the ability to combine many extremes in her use of media such as metal and cloth. She especially likes lifting rust, carbon and markings from charred surfaces by her own special and unique process. She uses this process to help define diverse meanings of everday things. Her tools include Xeroxed images, photography, sound, smell and touch while she produces photographs, sculptures and installations.
She was born in Augusta Georgia and received her BA from Baylor University in Waco Texas. She received her BS from Southern Colorado University. Sally Mankus resides and works in Shalimar Florida and her work has appeared in newspapers, publications and exhibitions all over the country.

I had my family and friends to help me with my work by letting me take photos of their face just like Sally. I edited my pictures on picmonkey. Picmonkey gave effect to the pictures making them look a lot like Sally Mankus work.
Unlike Sally Mankus my photos are colourful and more modern. The second picture (out of 4) is my favourite due to the coulor of the picture combining with the edit I have used.
PicMonkey is one of my favourite editing websites, Reasons being i like all the different and unusual edits on there. This was the only website that i was able to use for my mixed media photos. I used a painting and brick edit this give out an mixed media picture effect. The brick and painting edit makes the picture look old and interesting.
Linda Plaisted, an award-winning, classically-trained American painter, photographer, encaustic and mixed media artist who has exhibited work in galleries and museums around the world. Also she has created book and magazine cover illustrations for major publishers and been a pioneer in contemporary photomontage, founding Many Muses Studio in Washington, DC in 2000 as a place to explore the marriage of many media.
Each piece of artwork she has created is a story, layered by hand with images she have captured in her original photography, drawings, paintings and collected ephemera to create mixed media pieces with subtle depth and dreamlike detail.
Her unique vision for the landscapes in which we live, reverence for the natural world and ability to conjure bittersweet emotion from calming, uncluttered compositions is her trademark narrative style.
I used photo shop to recreate photos like Linda Plaisted. I used my family as models for my pictures and also i took the background photos of the sea in wales and of the Hulme bridge. I like the picture of the Hulme bridge
I found photo shop quiet a struggle to use as I didn't know how to use it properly. I had help of my friends for my pictures as they shown me how to use it. Finally I began to figure out how to use it and where all the tools were. First of all I just had a play about with it and came up with my own idea of following Linda's work then I researched all her different photos and chose one to recreate in my own way. Looking at them all i decided which one i wanted to recreate. I chose the one where the couple was dancing in the sky above to sea. I really like this picture as it creates an effect of love and passion. In the picture the couple are quiet old, this shows love can go on for ever. In my idea i did something different by using young modern people and more of a relaxing brighter place. I also make the style of the picture more warming and happy by using bright colours and happy people for my models.
Response for My final piece
Personally I really like the effectIi used on this picture of my sister. I used the edit 'paint'. Using the edit made the picture more bright and colourful. I think the painted effect really worked by working in the style of Sally Mankus as she created quiet an old painting look
Response for final piece 2
I like this photograph as it reminds me of the string Annette Messenger uses in her work and the texture of Sally's Mankus's work. The cobwebs give it a haunting feel.
